HARDWARE GROUPS

Note: The categories/groups of computer hardware are:

  • Input and Output
  • Storage
  • Internal and External 
The below table shows different groups/categories of computer hardware and their examples:


Note: 
  • Input devices: - Computer hardware devices used to enter/input data in the computer.
  • Output devices: - Computer hardware devices used show/display data or information on the computer.
  • Internal devices: - Computer hardware devices that are found inside the computer box/computer case.
  • External devices: Computer hardware devices that are found outside the computer box. these are also known as peripheral devices.
  • Storage devices: - Computer hardware devices used to keep data or information. some keep data permanent and some temporal. 

Now let us look at some functions of different examples of computer hardware:
  • Monitor: - To see what is being typed / what is happening on the computer. 
  • Computer Box (Computer case):- To keep/protect the internal hardware parts of the computer. 
  • Keyboard : - For typing / entering data.
  • Mouse:- To select icons/items on the computer.
  • Printer: - To print out / produce a hard copy from the computer. NOTE; the document inside a computer is called a “Soft copy”.
  • Scanner: - to enter information from products/items using the barcode.
  • Projector: - To produce / project images or documents from the computer for presentation.
  • Network Interface Card (NIC):- To provide connection to the internet.
  • Sound Card: - To produce music from the computer.
  • Graphics Card:- To produce pictures and videos.
  • Motherboard:- To supply power to the internal hardware devices of the computer.
  • Hard Disk Drive (HDD): - To keep data or information in the computer.
  • Central Pressing Unit (CPU): - This is the brain of the computer. It processes data or information on the computer.
